As the Chinese New Year approaches, many of us feel inspired to set resolutions aimed at self-improvement and personal growth. Whether it’s adopting healthier habits, pursuing new skills, or fostering better relationships, the excitement of a fresh start can motivate us to make meaningful changes. However, sticking to these resolutions often proves challenging as everyday life resumes.

Some of the most common resolutions include:

Practical tips to help you maintain your New Year’s resolutions

  1. Set Specific Goals – Rather than vague resolutions, define clear and specific goals. For example, instead of saying “get fit,” aim for “exercise three times a week.”
  2. Break It Down – Divide your resolution into smaller, manageable steps. This makes the goal less overwhelming and allows for incremental progress.
  3. Create a Plan – Develop a detailed action plan that outlines how you will achieve your goals. Include timelines and milestones to track your progress.
  4. Stay Accountable – Share your resolutions with friends or family who can help keep you accountable, or work with a professional like a health coach or mental health counsellor to help keep you accountable, and help you tackle obstacles.
  5. Track Your Progress – Keep a journal or use apps to monitor your progress. Reflecting on your achievements can boost motivation and help identify areas for improvement.
  6. Celebrate Small Wins – Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement can keep you motivated to continue.
  7. Focus on the Positive – Rather than concentrating on what you want to avoid, emphasise what you want to achieve. A positive mindset can enhance your motivation.
